Can you eat egg shells? | Find out here
Have you also been binning away the egg shells, thinking them to be of no use? STOP doing that because you can eat them. Yes you read that right. Egg shells are edible and full of health benefits.
Let's talk about why egg shells are edible-
- Eggshells are almost entirely composed of calcium carbonate (95%). The remaining 5% is composed of a mix of proteins and other minerals including strontium, fluoride, magnesium and selenium.
- An interesting fact is that calcium content in a single egg shell is almost double the recommended daily calcium.
- Regular consumption of eggs shells have shown significant and beneficial effects in decreasing bone loss.
- Calcium carbonate present in egg shells are absorbed as effectively as pure calcium carbonate. In one study on a group of postmenopausal women, eggshell calcium was more effective in increasing bone mass than pure calcium carbonate.
- Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis means porous bones. A condition in which bones become weak and brittle. Eggshell powder may even be more effective at reducing osteoporosis risk than purified calcium carbonate. Taking eggshell powder may improve bone strength in people with osteoporosis.

- Supplements made of eggshell membranes provide nutrients that may improve joint health.
